Tibet Banner Unfurled in Athens
8/25/04 - With the historic Acropolis site in Athens as a dramatic backdrop, a group of Tibetans unfurled a huge banner protesting the holding of the 2008 Olympic Games in China. The successful launching of the campaign heralds the start of several actions that will take place in Athens this week leading up to the closing Olympics ceremony on Sunday, where the banner will be handed over to the International Olympics Committee. The Tibetan rights supporters are asking the audience to turn their backs and not to applaud China's presentation and the handover of the Olympic flag from Athens to Beijing at Sunday's closing ceremony. "We have been encouraged by the response from Athenians to our campaign," said Tenzin D. Sewo, spokesperson for ITSN.
Tibetans Protest in Olympic Stadium
8/23/04 - A small group of Tibetan activists successfully displayed a banner at the women’s 10-meter springboard final. The banner was a Chinese national flag with the words "Free Tibet" in Chinese letters. During the medal ceremony it could be seen very clearly on the big stadium screen. Some Chinese supporters started to whistle and boo. Wangpo Tethong, ITSN spokesperson, explained the action’s aim: "It is the Chinese and their leadership who have to learn that the Tibetans don’t want to live under oppression. I hope that this small action will contribute to get this message through. We are very satisfied with the start of our campaign and hope to be even more successful with other actions that are planned for the coming days."
"Say No to Beijing 2008" Campaign Background
With the hand-over of the Olympic flag from Athens to Beijing only a few days away, opposition to the Beijing 2008 Olympic games is heating up! Yesterday, representatives of the International Tibet Support Network (of which SFT is a member) unfurled a massive banner at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens. Today, we put out a press release calling for the audience at Sunday's closing ceremony to show their support for Tibetan freedom by remaining silent during China's presentation and accepting of the flag. Over the next four years, Students for a Free Tibet will intensify our opposition to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. China has the opportunity to use the 2008 Games as a historic milestone by which to become a responsible member of the international community, one which recognizes and respects fundamental human rights and is worthy of the honor of hosting such a prestigious event. Unless the Chinese government ends its illegal occupation of Tibet and the repression of its own people, the 2008 Games are sure to be the site of international protest and inevitable crackdowns by the Chinese leadership.
