Breaking News » His Holiness Gives Rare Nyingma Sermon Published Today Some 3,600 Buddhist practitioners sat through two days of intensive teaching at the University of Miami's Convocation Center as His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Tuesday interpreted the text of what is arguably described as the most rarely offered instruction of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama began the teaching on the "Instructions on Garland Views" yesterday.  read more » Hanging with His Holiness Published Today The Dalai Lama is speaking, but you can't hear the words.

"No problem," as His Holiness is fond of saying. The 14th reincarnation of Buddha is used to his guests freezing up, whether it's Pierce Bros-nan, Muhammad Ali or a nobody. He melts that panic by meeting your eyes and giving you a soul-stirring smile and a little giggle.

Osel Dorje Nyingpo, the organization, took in $1.042 million and spent $907,000 during the three days of meetings it produced in Broward and Miami-Dade for the Tibetan leader, ODN president Dana Schwartz reported.

She said the Dalai Lama has asked the $135,000 to be divided equally three ways:

First will be hurricane relief efforts in Florida. ODN is still researching which groups to donate to, Schwartz said.

The Central Tibetan Administration in India, which benefits Tibetan refugees.

Five monastery projects in India, Tibet, Bhutan and Sikkim.

The proceeds came mostly from ticket sales to the two events: a public address Sunday at the Office Depot Center in Sunrise, and religious workshops Monday and Tuesday at the Convocation Center at the University of Miami.

Another $236,000 came from direct donations, from 500 individuals and companies. Fifteen thousand dollars came from vendor fees, for the 26 organizations selling at the gatherings, Schwartz said.

Mindfulness - living consciously in the moment - has become "just that significant" in American culture, said editor-in-chief Seth Bauer.  read more » A living tradition since the 16th century Published Yesterday The institution of the Dalai Lama, a title that means "Ocean of Wisdom" in Mongolian, came into existence 360 years ago in Tibet.

The first person to be recognized as a Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso, lived in the 16th century and was named the third Dalai Lama by a Mongolian prince. (The first two Dalai Lamas were recognized retroactively.)

The Dalai Lama did not become a political position until the 17th century, however, when the fifth Dalai Lama assumed leadership of Tibet. In accordance with Tibetan tradition, the current Dalai Lama was discovered by his disciples at age 2 after passing a series of tests that showed he had been reincarnated. He has led the Tibetan people for 54 years.  read more
