Dalai Lama in good health after check

BOMBAY (Reuters) - The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has undergone a routine health check in Bombay and has been found to be in excellent health, according to a statement issued by the Lilavati Hospital.

The Dalai Lama, 70, lives as the head of a government-in-exile in the northern Indian hill town of Dharamsala. He fled Tibet in 1959 to India after a failed uprising against Beijing's communist rule, imposed after Chinese troops entered the Himalayan region in 1950.

In January 2002, the Dalai Lama, awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1989 for his non-violent campaign against Chinese rule in Tibet, was flown to Bombay after complaining of stomach pain.

Doctors at Lilavati hospital said at that time that he had a bowel infection and treated him successfully with antibiotics.
