70th Birth Day of HH Dalai Lama
By N. Samphell BVI
Chicago - July 6, 2005: Tibetans all over the world are throwing thanks giving 70th Birth Day party to HH the Dalai Lama on his 70th Birth Day for His compassionate leadership. This is a unique and an unprecedented celebration of its kind in human history. Almost all, specially the elders, in Traditional Tibetan costumes and dresses, from a couple families in some part of world to hundreds in other parts, got together in private homes, public halls and in open parks to participate in the celebration.
Unlike any other birth day celebration, it began, in all cases, with prayers for the long life of His Holiness for world peace and prosperity, with Dey-Sel and Tibetan tea being served. Tibetans consider the serving of Dey-Sel (sweet rice with raisin), as an auspicious thing. As a Symbolic audience with HH Dalai Lama, people offered white scarf and an envelope to the enthroned portrait of HH the Dalai Lama at the center.
The Tibetan Administration, Dharamsala, India announced that this is a year round celebration of prayers and social services. Tibetans in India had already began celebrating it on the 5th day of the 5th Tibetan Month, (a lunar calendar), which fell on 12th June with longevity offerings to His Holiness in the cycles of the wish fulfilling longevity Goddess, white Tara for Buddha Dharma and world peace.
Tibetans in Midwest, US converged in Minnesota this year for the great celebration. Games like the on going Annual Pawo Thupten Ngodup memorial Soccer, and Basketball tournament were held among Tibetan Associations in the Midwest from July 2nd to July 6th.
Beside these games, Tibetan cultural dance by children, concert by Ex-TIPA artists, held every night.
Good Karma Construction Inc. Chicago, (GKCIC) sponsored Chicago nomad Soccer Team for the Midwest tournament. GKCIC is owned and operated solely by Tsultim Ngab-dak and is a major supporter of Buddhist View International. It is the 1st Tibetan owned Class A Licensed Developer and General Contractor in Chicago.
While most of the younger Tibetans in Chicago went to Minnesota, they got back on time in Chicago for the celebration on July 6th in Tibetan Alliance. With usual prayers, Dey-sel, Tibetan tea and white scarf offering to the portrait of HH, Tibetans picnicked all day long on Lake Michigan beach playing Volleyball and other traditional games. In the back ground of the shimmering lake with kids playing in the sand they ate, played and sang songs until dusk.
Tibetan Alliance, Chicago has a long tradition of hosting dinner party to its American friends on the occasion of Tibetan New Year and HH the Dalai Lama’s birth day celebration. The tradition began in 1993 Tibetan New Year celebration with about 40 Tibetans in a snowy evening in the landmark American Indian Center, in uptown Chicago.
Tibetan Alliance President, Kelsang Draggo said the invitations are already out to American friends of Tibet and the dinner party will be on July 15 (Saturday) at 6:00 PM in Unity Church at Thome Street.
