The King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev in the World Buddhist Conferences

H.M. King Birendra

May 23, 1972

MESSAGE FROM HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV THE 10th GENERAL CONFERENCE OF THE WORLD FOLLOWERS OF BUDDHISTS.

I have heard with pleasure that the 10th world Buddhist Conference is being held in Colombo this year.

While we hold the Buddha as our dear compatriot, dearer still are his ideals of peace, non-violence and universal brotherhood.  The principles he enunciated are as relevant today in solving our domestic problems as they are in tackling the complex issues of our times.  I wish the Conference all success and hope that it will contribute to the cause of peace and understanding among nations.

MESSAGE FROM HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV TO THE WORLD FELLOWSHIP OF BUDDHISTS

1.  It is heartening to note that a new building of the world fellowship of Buddhists Headquarters at Bangkok is being inaugurated by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulayadej of Thailand.  The occasion gives us reason to admire those people whose efforts have resulted into the construction of the building.

2.  While the Buddha wanted peace among men, he also sought ways and means to liberate mankind from all bondage.  In our opinion, Buddha’s inspiring principles of peace are as relevant today as in the   As such, we appreciate the world fellowship of Buddhists for the efforts it is putting into popularize the preaching of the Buddha.

3.  It may also be mentioned here that, with the good will and cooperation of friendly countries, efforts are being made for the development of Lumbini, Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal.

May the world fellowship of Buddhists succeed in propagating the ideas and ideals it has stood for.

MESSAGE OF HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV ON THE OCCASION OF BUDDHA JAYANTI

May 25, 1975

1.  In world full of ignorance, disease, suffering and unrest, Nepal gave birth to Lord Buddha, who showed the path to peace through the cultivation of truth, wisdom and non-violence.  In our times, the significance of the Buddha’s teaching on peace and non-violence is increasing day by day.  It is, therefore, a fitting homage to Gautam Buddha, whose birth, enlightenment and death all coincide with this day, that we celebrate this day as a Day of peace in order to emphasize the urgency of peace.  May this day inspire us, not only to study, assimilate and absorb the precepts of the Buddha, but also to contribute our share to world peace and live by his precepts.

MESSAGE OF HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV ON THE OCCASION OF THE BUDDHA JAYANTI

May 13, 1976

1.         I am happy to learn that the world Buddhist Conference is going to celebrate the 2500th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha this year.  The full moon day of Baishakha happens to be the day in which the birth, enlightenment and the Mahaparinivana of Gautam Buddha coincided, thus adding significance to this day.   That this day is observed for the first time at Buddha’s birthplace, Lumbini, lands still greater significance to Lumbini as such.

2.            Buddha’s compassion for suffering humanity, his concern for man’s affection born of ignorance and darkness and his effort to liberate man from bondage, his love for rationalism, science, truth, peace and non-violence have always been sources of inspiration for us.  May this day remind us these cherished values and may it remain alive to follow these ideals.

MESSAGE OF HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV TO THE ASIAN BUDDHIST CONFERENCE FOR PEACE TO BE HELD IN JAPAN

July 24, 1976

1.         I am glad to hear that a delegation from Nepal is going to participate in an Asian Buddhist Conference for peace, which is going to be held in Japan from 24th through 29th July 1976.

2.  I feel that the time has come when every resource, contribution or donation, be personal social or national should be spent in rebuilding the sacred place of Lumbini, which gave birth to the Buddha.  It has been our earnest effort to secure, maintain and perpetuate peace in this land, which gave to the world the Buddha, and the gospel of peace.

3.  In this just endeavor we in Nepal solicit the cooperation of friends everywhere, and I wish the Conference all success.

MESSAGE OF HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV TO THE PUBLICATION OF A BOOK ENTITLED “BRAHMINS IN BUDDHA’S TIMES”

October 28, 1977

1.         The Bhramins in Buddha‘s time is an appreciable work that it attempts to depict the social background of the Buddhist era besides containing the Buddhist history and philosophy.  It is an outcome of a systematic through the collection and classification of some prominent characters of the times scattered through Tripitaka, in itself a MAGNUM OPUS in the Pali script.  Perhaps, it will also be desirable to show through such work that the Nepali People not only practise religious tolerance but also take interest in all religions of the world.  This useful work while shedding like on the life and time of Sidhartha Gautam, the Prince of Peace, will be yet, another contribution to the treasures of Nepali literature.

2.  In the preparation of this work Bikchhu Amritananda Mahasthabir deserve thanks for his painstaking research.

MESSAGE FROM HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2527th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF LORD BUDDHA

May 26, 1982

I am happy to hear that the 2527th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha is being celebrated this year by organizing a number of programmers as usual.

The land that saw the nativity of Lord Buddha is also a land known for piety and sublime peace.  Indeed, it is an extension of the same concept that manifests itself in the proposal of Nepal as a Zone of Peace.  Under a master plan for the development of Lumbini, we have, over the last few years, created some basic infrastructures with our own toil and resources.  Lumbini now enjoys the facilities of a few guest houses, electricity, drinking water, drainage, a blacktopped road linking with the national highway and airport.  We have also planted thousands of tree- saplings.  In this way, we have been effortful to develop Lumbini as a sacred garden for pilgrims, tourists, historians and archeologists from around the globe.  In our view, the time has come to seek and mobilize international support and build further by making proper use of these resources.  In this way, we will be able to pay lasting tribute to Siddartha Gautam, the Prince of Peace.  May this day inspire us all to seek peace and welfare for the whole of humanity.

MESSAGE FROM HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV TO THE 14th GENERAL CONFERENCE OF THE WORLD FELLOWSHIP OF BUDDHISTS TO BE HELD IN SRI LANKA FROM THE 2ND TO 9TH AUGUST 1984

July 24, 1984

I am happy to hear that the 14th Genaral Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists is being held in Sri Lanka in august this year.

At a time when countries around the world have to strive to equip themselves with the latest of the deadly weapons, Buddha‘s message of peace may be heard only faintly.  But it is the voice of reason as well as the voice to humanity throughout the world.  It is fitting that Nepal which gave birth to Siddhartha Gautam should choose to become a Zone of Peace, in itself a tribute to the memory of a Prince who taught man how to redeem himself from violence and suffering, all the more reason why people and government have decided to host the 15th general Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists here in Nepal.  Looking forwards to receive cooperation from all participants, we wish the Colombo Conference all success.

MESSAGE FROM HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIKRAM SHAH DEV TO THE FIFTEENTH WORLD BUDDHIST CONFERENCE HELD IN KATHAMNDU FROM NOVEMBER 27 TO DECEMBER 2,1986

November 27, 1986

We are happy that the World Fellowship of Buddhist has chosen Nepal as the venue for the Fifteenth World Buddhist Conference.  It is only befitting that the Conference is being held in Nepal in the land where Buddha was born and a country, which wishes it self to be a Zone of Peace.  While Lumbini at the time of the birth of Prince Siddhartha in 623 B.C.  Was a garden lying in the border principality of the Shakyas and Koliyas, it is now a centre of pilgrimages for people from various parts of the world.  Efforts are underway on a national and international scale to restore and preserve the rich cultural and religious heritage of Lumbini.

It is my hope that the Conference will enlighten the international community on the teachings of Lord Buddha for peace and well being of mankind throughout the world.

We extend our welcome to all participants to the Conference and hope they will have a pleasant stay.

I wish the Conference all success.

MESSAGE FROM HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV TO THE 17th GENERAL CONFERENCE OF THE WORLD FELLOWSHIP OF BUDDHISTS TO BE HELD IN SEOUL, REPUBLIC OF KOREA.

October 23, 1990

We are happy to learn that the 17th General Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists is being held in Seoul this year.  Having had the honor of hosting two such Conferences in the past, the 4th and the 15th in 1956 and 1986 respectively, we in Nepal attach importance to the seoul meet.

Although propounded over two and half millennium ago, the teaching of the Buddha and the Buddhists philosophy, based as they are on peace, compassion and tolerance, are no less relevant today than they were ever before.  We hope that the Conference by highlighting the messages of the Buddha as norms for the conduct of relations between peoples and nations will contribute towards mitigating the strife and tension that the human society is constantly having to put up with.

We wish the Conference all success.

MESSAGE OF HIS MAJESTY KING BIRENDRA BIR BIKRAM SHAH DEV KING OF NEPAL TO THE 18th GENERAL CONFERNCE OF THE WORLD FELLOWSHIP OF BUDDHISTS FROM OCTOBER 27 TO NOVEMBER 3, 1992

October 27, 1992

I am pleased to send, as in the past, my greetings and good wishes to the distinguished delegates and also to the organizers of the 18th General Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists.  The biennial General Conference, among other things, affords the participants from various contries an opportunity to ponder over ways and means to have resources to the precepts of Lord Buddha for contributing constructively to the betterment of human society and to peace and harmony in the world.

Wish the General Conference all success.

Death in Kathmandu

In a farewell ceremony of the highest

magnitude, crowds gathered on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River on June 2 for the

cremation of the Nepalese royal family. It was just one day after the worst mass murder of royalty since the 1918 Bolshevik slaying of the Russian tsar and his kin. In a bizarre scene at the Nepalese palace, Crown Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram allegedly shot and killed his father, King Birendra, his mother, Queen Aishwarya, and seven other royals before taking his own life. Days later Prince Gyanendra, the uncle of the shooter, was named as the nation's new king. Gyanendra called the shooting "accidental:'
