Chitwan district lies in the Narayani Zone, named after the Narayani River, which flows in this district.
In the west, this district touches Nawalparasi, Tanhu, Gorkha and Dhadhing districts. In the south, it touches our neighboring country India. Here, Gurung, Tamang Tharu, Mangar, Bahun Chettri, Newar, Chepang and many other castes are also living together. Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and many other people are also living in harmonious relationships. There is an approximate population of about 450,000 people, the main market being Bharatpur. There are two airports for tourists of which Maghuly is the main airport. Situated close to the Royal Chitwan National Park, National and International tourists can consider this district as the main tourist center. The route from the capital to Lumbini Buddha’s birthplace lies in the same district. Many tourists come to see the rare wild animals such as Rhinoceros, Tiger, Bears and Chetri. Narayanghat is the main city of this district. In the east of the Narayanghat and in Bharatpur municipality (ward No. 2) there is Thin Khola. In Nepal towns are divided in different wards.
A Buddhist temple has been constructed very effectively with full participation of the people in this district. The Status and artistic structure of the monastery, typically constructed on the basis of ancient model, could be an additional counterpoint attraction for both National and International tourists.
BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF MAHA BUDDHA GONPA (MONASTERY)
In the Chitwan district of Bharatpur Municipality Area, the Gurung Buddhist people have formed a Gurung society under the leadership of late Tek Bahadur. They formed this society in 1962 AD to preserve and support the Dharma. It was formed in the name of Buddha Dharma Sewa Samittee. To help the committee; the coordinator gave 1 Kattha of land. Recently, a Buddhist Stupa has been built. Many Buddhists followers felt that it was difficult to organize various Buddhist religious programs because of congested land.
In order to maintain it, an additional 10 Kattha of land was provided by His Majesty Shree 5 Maharaj Dhry. This committee was reformed in V.S. 204,1under the Presidency of Shree Tek Prasad Gurung. V.S. refers to the Nepalese way of counting years of the Nepalese calendar.
The new working committee was set up. During the period of committee organization and land receptions the committee had to overcome many problems. Although they have the support and co-operation from all Buddhist followers of the district, the struggle continued. Once again the committee was reformed in 2048 V.S. Under the presidency of Devendra Gurung. The new working committee was organized with 13 members. Because of the goodness, forwardness and creativeness of this committee, it has, 3 Bight 12 Kattha 10 Dhur land. In this area including 65 old Sal trees, one could see various other trees approximately 5000 are growing in number. To develop this area, a master plan has been made and work is being done according to it. In this master plan, there is the proposal of building a Mahayana Buddhist Gompa.
This monastery has been built in both ancient and modern art styles with mixed architecture of both Mahayana and Theravada representing the symbol of unity between these two traditions.
The height of this monastery is 22.5 m (73 feet), width is 12m (39 feet) and length is 22.5m (73 feet.) The inside height is 3.5m (4.5 feet.) Sakyamuni Buddha’s statue has been placed; on the both sides of the status 2.70-m (5.5 feet) high Lokeshwor and Padma Sambhava’s statues have been placed. In front of the statue 500 persons can offer their prayer. It is 1km in distance from Ampatari police station. This area lies in the west side of the Pungi River whereas in the east, there is a pitch road. In the south, there is the border of Basenea Narayanadha linking road.

The Gumba is situated in Garamant V.D.C. Ward no.9 approx. 3.5 km south of Birtamod near Sainik Bazar Approx 4,467 sq. ft land was donated by Mrs. Yam Kumari Gurung and construction was started on the supervision of Shree Nar Bahadur Gurung in BS 2046 all expenditure was covered by Gurung families. Gompa has a working committee under the supervision of Hom Bahadur Gurung.The Senior lama is Siri Prasad Gurung who has a three students under his instruction. Approx 5 lakh ncrs. Has been incurred for the construction of this monastery.
