Situated east of Kathmandu in the nearby mountains, the Namo Buddha Stupa is one of the three important Stupas of Nepal. It is the place where one of the incarnations of the Buddha offered his body to a starving tigress and her cubs.
At the top of the hill, a retreat Center and temple of the Karma Kagyu tradition was established in 1977. There are 9 monks and a retreat Master living in the traditional three-year retreat.
Next to the retreat center is the more recently built Institute of Higher Studies for the education of monks. Presently, there are 40 monks studying Buddhist philosophy, literature, religious studies, etc.
There is also a guesthouse nearby where lay people can stay and practice meditation on a short or long term basis. There is, as well, a Dewachen temple where one can keep the ashes of the deceased in a holy place.
