12/01/05 TIBETAN MUSIC FESTIVAL ... CHICAGO USA...

  By – Norbu Samphell

Chicago; 11/25/05: TIBETcenter, Chicago hosted Tibetan Music festival, US Tour-2005, a live concert by Gonpo Entertainment group from India at Lake Street Church, Evanston, Illinois from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM

The group consisted of Tibetan singers from India, Nepal and the States. Their songs ranged from traditional Tibetan songs to modern pop and rap type songs in Tibetan and a little bit of comedy too. About 250 people, including a few from Bloomington, Indiana, attended the concert, which is a huge turn out considering the number of Tibetans in Chicago.

The first song by Tachung that described about the non-violent warriors of Tibet - nuns and monks was simply magnificent and encouraging. The title "Snow Lion" matched the song well. In our Shambhala tradition Snow Lion represents the joy and high spirit in helping others compassionately. Thus the concert began with certain auspiciousness.

Traditional songs have deeper meaning and are more profound with an aura of dignity, while the modern ones are more emotional and sensual. While traditional songs brought forth meditative-contemplative pose among the audience, the modern pop type made the audience jump in their seat, clapping their hands singing some of the lines along. Some enthusiastic teens hopped up the stage to dance with the singers.

Soon after the concert they were invited in Tibetan Community Hall for a personal get-to-know type of get to gather. They drove early next morning to Minnesota and then to Medison Tibetan Community.
