Nyanang Phelgyeling Monastery is located at the cavern as Dhroepa-phug which literally means “belly shaped cavern” in Phelgyeling, Tibet, where the renowned poet and yogi Milarepa, considered as the second Buddha, once sat in retreat. The fifth Dalai Lama consecrated repository of vast collection of Buddhist canons, this primitive monastery in 1664.
The monastery also has the seal of authority that the fifth Dalai Lama presented which can still be seen even today. The monks in this monastery numbered around 300 carried the work of constructing sand Mandala and performing religious dances until the Chinese takeover of Tibet in 1959. Among the monks, who were forced into exile, around 30 monks, both young and old, managed to escape into Nepal carrying with them some of the priceless statues and canons. These statues include:
* The statue of Milarepa from the cavern at Phelgyeling
* The talking statue of Drolma (Tara) at Leshing in Nyanang
* The talking statue of Lord Sakyamuni, which was from the period of King Lang Dharma.
* The foot print of the Sixth Dalai Lama on black stone
* Two complete volumes of Kagyur and one complete volume of Ten-gyur.
* One complete volume of the commentary from Je-Yab-Sre-Sum
* Many other Thangka paintings and images.
This monastery also has relics of Lord Buddha presented by the president Premadasa of Sri Lanka in 1994.
Presently, there are over 70 monks and the main emphasis of studies is on the esoteric science and aside from philosophical studies, they also impart modern education to suit the present needs for which purpose a school has also been opened.
