Lhalung Monastery

Located at Monta in Lhodrak County; the Monastery was built by Gama Gagukpa Sect in 1155 as a place to perform the Buddhist rites. In the mid -17 century. It was converted to a monastery of Gelukpa Sect by the 5th Dalai Lama and was conferred upon the manors, lands and many subjects. Because of the special favor bestowed by the 5th Dalai Lama and the emperors of Qing Dynesty, this monastery had enjoyed great prestige in Tibet even in Bhutan. And the monastery was also made almost known to every family of Tibet for it was in this monastery that the monk Lhalung  Pelkhidorjee murdered the last Tibetan king Lhangtama and brought an end to “Tupo” dynasty.
