Khamdang Monastery

   Khamdang Monastery

Khamdang Monastery was built in the 11th century as a Monastery of Ghadampa Sect. At mid-11th century, it was changed to Mokhipa Sect, for Mokhi Lhokhi Drolma created in this Monastery this new Tibetan Buddhist Sect characterized with drum- beating while chanting. In the 17th century it was converted to the Yellow Sect. Mokhi Lhokhi Drolma was a very distinctive woman in Tibetan Buddhism history for she was the only female who founded a Sect, and her Mokhipa Sect had once widely speeded in Tibet. These had played a positive role in raising the social statues of Tibetan women of that time.
