Tibetan Schools in Kathmandu ,Nepal

Srongtsen Brikhuti

Boarding High School

Srongtsen Brikhuti Boarding High School was es-

tablished in March 1982. It is one of the four Ti- betan Schools in Kathmandu affiliated to the De- partment of Education, Central Tibetan Adminis- tration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dharamsala, India.

The primary aim of the school is to preserve our rich and unique religion and cultural heritage and at the same time propagate them to maintain our entity and cohesiveness. It further aims at culti- vating social virtues like decency, punctuality, dis- cipline, cleanliness, mutual understanding, co-op- eration, patience etc. and thereby molding the young Tibetan children into not only responsible citizens of Tibetan, but also of the planet we live in. Here, I would like to quote a message of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

"The ultimate teaching of Buddhism is to free one- self from the Sam sara and thereby, attain enlight- enment. It further states that during the tempo- rary attainment of human life, one must work hard to lead a happy, decent and a life free of any so- cial havoc. If we could cultivate such a life, our lives will be free of any social tension and further cultivate international brotherhood, though we are not of the same parents. And thus, we could help each other and lead a harmonious life. Such a life is the happiest and the most prosperous life."

The school aims to impart a quality education to our younger Tibetans to enable them to walk shoul- der to shoulder with other educated youths, but also aims at providing excellent educational fa-

cilities to the poorest of the poor students whose

Iparents are unable to paya huge amount of money.

During the 1997 session, the school has 738 stu- dents who are well looked after by well trained and dedicated 56 staff. The school has classes from LKG to Class X. The children study the following subjects in our school, viz. English, Tibetan, Nepali, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Geogra- phy, History, Civics, Computer, Music and dances, games and sports and French language.

Today, the school is able to provide a quality edu- cation to its students and at the same time able to provide excellent facilities to the children who are from very poor families. They study in modern ven- tilated and spacious classrooms, live in very com- fortable school hostel having both hot and cold water facilities, experiment in well-equipped sci- ence laboratory, read in well furnished library and also study computer lessons in our computer room having 20 computers. We are very happy to in- form our readers that the very poor students of our school are provided with sponsors from different countries. As such, our poor students enjoy the best facilities that are mainly provided to the chil- dren from very rich families. So far, we are able to provide sponsors to more than 200 poor students and our efforts are always there to find more spon- sors to the remaining poor and needy children whose number is increasing every year. Our school's criteria of providing sponsors to children are as under: -

Recent arrivals from Tibet.

Orphan or semi-orphan children.

Children from very poor families and very remote areas of Nepal and

Divorced parent's children having social problems. If any individual or organization is interested in sponsoring our poor children, kindly contact us on the school address. Thank you.
