Nepal is a multi religious country comprising various ethnic groups and various languages. Geographically speaking, it is a land of mountains, hills, and Terai. Most of the rural people aren’t educated in reading and writing. Especially, the people of the hilly regions are traditionally followers of Buddhism. Lamas are living an important group according to their religious culture. In order to conserve their religious culture, they engage in restoration and construction of monasteries. In this area, most people are impressed by this forwardness of Lamas.
On the other hand, after democracy in the country, they are working in the construction and development sector. While Nepal is not truly a democracy (ie-equal participation for all the people,) the country’s full potential of development is not possible. Looking into the history of Nepal, it has always been necessary to have the co-operation of lay people and Monks. So, people who live in remote areas (in monasteries, with the religious activities) are dependent on the lay people accepting traditional religious cultures.
Monks should be encouraged to participate in the development of the country equally. For this reason, the Gompa Management and Development Committee was formed.
For the Monastery management, this high level committee was established on 24th Mangsir, 2036 BS Initially, this committee managed the monasteries and Lamas in the country. Its aim was to unite and bring harmony to all the Lamas to promote the development of the country, maintaining each variation in religion’s respective customs and religious rites.
To manage it more effectively, Gompa Management & Development Committee was formed on 5th Ashad, 2045 BS according to the development act 2013.
This committee has been preserving the increasing condition of the patriotic feeling. It has been trying to unite people for the development of the country.
