Statement by Tibetans in the Midwest

On March 10th last week the Tibetans in Lhasa, taking great risks to their lives, started a peaceful protest against the Chinese.  The protesters, when met with brutal crackdown, erupted into a highly charged resistance against the Chinese presence in Tibet.  The protest has since spread to other parts of Tibet resulting in hundreds of unarmed Tibetans being killed.

In light of these painful and grave developments in Tibet, we the Tibetans in the Midwest region are marching to demonstrate our solidarity with our brothers and sisters in our homeland.  We the Tibetans gathered here call upon all peace loving citizens of the world to stand up with us against the brutal regime of the Peoples Republic of China and hold it accountable for its actions.

We urge the United States, the UN and international organizations to pressure China to meet the following demands:

1.     Immediately withdraw all armed forces from the city limits of Lhasa and lift the virtual marshal law in Tibet.

2.     Allow freedom of movement and communication in Tibet.

3.     Release all political prisoners including those arrested last week.

4.     Allow international media to enter Tibet without restrictions.

5.     Appoint an independent and international committee to investigate the cause of the protest and recommend solutions.

6.      Urge the Chinese government to find reasonable and peaceful solutions to the problems through earnest and substantive negotiations with representatives of the Tibetan government in Exile.

Three Tibetans Arrested in Chicago Taking Part in Demonstration
CHICAGO, IL. March 14 - Three Tibetans were arrested in Chicago on Friday during a candle light vigil and demonstration in front of Chinese Consulate. Two men and one woman who live in Chicago were arrested. Their actions came soon after the vigil and demonstration began at the Consulate.

Two of the Tibetans were arrested for destruction of property after jumping on cars of officials leaving China's Consulate. One other Tibetan was arrested for disorderly conduct after throwing a cup of coffee at an official leaving the Consulate. Chinese Consulate in Chicago filed charges against all three of these individuals. They were taken to the local police station where they were booked. Later all three were released at midnight and two men are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

The event at the Chinese Consulate was in support of the Tibetans in Tibet who have been arrested and killed for peacefully protesting and demanding their freedom. It was also in support of the Tibetans in India who have been arrested for participating in a peaceful "Return March to Tibet" and demonstrating in front of China's Embassy in Delhi.

Approximately 80 individuals attended the event in Chicago. Almost all the attendees were Tibetan.

Along with chanting slogans, the participants recited prayers.

The Tibetan Alliance of Chicago, Students for a Free Tibet-Chicago, Students for a Free Tibet-Madison, and the International Tibet Independence Movement helped to coordinate the vigil and demonstration.

Further actions are scheduled for Chicago in the coming days including additional demonstrations at Chinese Consulate.
