Sakya Center

 

INTRODUCTION

The Sakya Center is the principal seat of the Sakya Order of Tibetan Buddhism and is the personal monastery of His Holiness Sakya Trizin. Venerable Acharya Jamyang Legshey La  is its present director.

Since its establishment in 1964, The Center is a monastic institute which also offers traditional education in Buddhist religion, rituals, ritual music and dance, art and other related subjects. Besides these, the students also learn English and Hindi to keep up with the changing world and need for communication with the local population ability to spread the teachings of Lord Buddha.

After completing their studies at the Center, students attend either Sakya Thubten Namgyal Ling Institute or the Sakya College for further education in Higher Buddhist Studies.

The Center is a charitable society and is duly registered with the Government of India. It accepts students from all over India and from the neighboring countries of Nepal and Bhutan irrespective of caste and in a non-discriminatory manner. The present strength of the Center is about 300 which includes both students and staff members.

The number of Sangha increase every year with new entrants joining the Center regularly. Presently, the Center tries its best to provide for all aspects life of the residents including food, clothing and shelter. It also provides for the medical expenses as well as other expenditures. The residents of the Center range from the very young to the very old.

The main source of income for the Center is donations from devotees and aid agencies as well as sponsorships and some grants from the government of India and the Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamsala. The Center, apart from taking on all these responsibilities, also embarks on new projects which include new residential buildings to accommodate its resident who multiply each year and computer training to its students to facilitate publishing of Buddhist texts.
