Lopon Thinley Nyima Rinpoche

Thinley Nyima Rinpoche is the successor of Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche as the Lopon, or Ponlop, of Menri monastery in Dolanji, India. He was born in a remote region of Dolpo in Western Nepal. His family name is 'Yangton' and its ancestry is traced back to Yangton Shenrab Gyaltsen, a famous Dzogchen and tantric master born in the year 1077 CE who first wrote down the Dzogchen Experiential Transmission (Zhang Zhung Nyam Gyud) that is currently taught by Yongdzin Rinpoche and Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche. All male members of the Yangton family become tantric practitioners and make the traditional three year retreat. Rinpoche began his in 1976 at the age of ten. In 1979, finished with the retreat, he went to the Bönpo monastery in Dolanji, India to become a monk. He attended the Dialectical School and received his Geshe degree in 1989. He then taught in the school until 1992, when he became the Ponlop of the monastery, where he is currently responsible for the teaching. He is quite interested in teaching in the West as he enjoys teaching in a lively fashion and appreciates that Western students like to ask questions.
