Thupten Lobsang

Born In Tibet. Exiled from Tibet in 1959 with mother and other relatives.

Grew up in India. At the age of 8 entered the Gyuto Tantric Monastery in India.

Tibetan monk for 25 years at the Gyuto Tantric Monastery in India. The Gyuto Tantric Monastery was founded in 1474 by Jey Kunga Dondrub, a leading disciple of His Holiness the First Dalai Lama in Tibet. It was the largest tantric monastery in Tibet unti11959. The monastery was reestablished in India after 1959.

Chant Master for 7 years of multiphonic chanting, which is singing up to, three notes of a chord simultaneously. Featured in the PBS documentary "Timeless Voices" narrated by Martin Sheen and Margo Kidder .

Toured United States, Canada, Switzerland, France & Germany in 1985, 1988 and 1991. The musical group The Grateful Dead sponsored tour in 1988.

Recorded CD: The Gyuto Monks "Freedom Chants From The Roof Of The World" featuring Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead, Philip Glass and Kitaro. Recorded at George Lucas's Skywalker soundstage.

Studied and mastered butter sculptures and sand mandalas, a sacred art in Tibet, at the Gyuto Tantric Monastery where days and nights were spent in study, contemplation, and practice of ritual arts, including painting, sculpture in wood, clay and butter, sewing, dancing, singing and healing.
